Why Poetry Matters

When in this world, there are millions of people suffering, why does poetry matter?

April is National Poetry Month and this year, it is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Since the launch by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, poetry month has now become the largest literary celebration in the world, uniting people together to read and write poems. It has increased awareness of why poetry matters.

So…why does poetry matter? I could tell you a story that during my morning walk, I saw a southern magnolia flower, and it made me think of it as something holy. Or, I could have you read my poem, Southern Magnolia Flower, and hope that you feel the sentiment embodying you…perhaps even hope? Poetry, in my opinion, makes a difference.

From a personal experience, I can honestly say it offers a unique way of understanding, making even the smallest of things most meaningful.  When there are no words you can say…a poem might be the perfect way to convey the message.  It feeds our hunger for emotional connection. There is a poem for every mood and situation…grief, joy, peace, war…you just have to name it, and it is there. Poetry can be with us, in our moment, holding our hand, when we need it.  Poetry asks something of us, doesn’t it?  To be curious, present, or urgent?  It only takes a few words, and Poetry hits you in the gut….like with tears, anger, laughter.

The language and structure of a poem have a way of offering us breath.  A moment to pause, and fully place our attention on the senses of the poem.  Poetry helps us feel less alone.

Tell me your thoughts on why poetry matters.
